The urban centre of Portalegre grew mainly from the 16th century onward, the moment when Portalegre became town and bishopric. During the next centuries, industrial development took some noble and bourgeois families to the new town, where they built houses with charm and greatness – creating one of the best sets of noble houses in Portugal.

There is a tour passing by the noble houses; it includes a set of 15 noble houses located in the town, whose facades and coat of arms of the families could be admired. As example, we refer two, side by side, in the Praça da República.

Portalegre has notable religious monuments: the cathedral, the churches and the convents; the museums (the Municipal, the House Museum of José Régio, the Tapestries Museum Guy Fino) and the centre of the Robinson factory enlarges the culture heritage of Portalegre.

Tapestries Museum Guy Fino

This museum is dedicated to the presentation, preservation and study of an important parcel of the national artistic heritage represented by the tapestries of Portalegre. The name of the museum – Guy Fino - is a tribute to the man that definitely inserted Portugal in the list of the big international producers of tapestry.

The characteristic design of the stitch of Portalegre, created by Manuel do Carmo Peixeiro, allows the extraordinary ability of expression and the genuine interpretation of the card. The museum is divided in two different nucleus: in the first there are the historical and technical concepts of the tapestries of Portalegre; in the second one there is an exhibition of tapestries.
